They’re not, you know; dualism is never an answer, so change either/or into both/and. We live in this world and taxes, we know, are as inevitable as death—a necessary ‘evil.’
Accordingly, Jesus’ question to the leaders is much more complex than it initially seems.
What does belong to God, he is asking of us as well as them, and what belongs to secular authorities?
Perhaps find the answer in your contemplative prayer. Be still, ask him, listen for his response.
