Bishop Barron’s very balanced commentary should be compulsory viewing for all of us who think nothing of responding to charges about others on the net. In a normal (face to face) conversation, we are usually a little more reflective before we launch into our angry tirades, because we realise that there is someone else physically present who might refute our claims. When we punch keys (an anonymous response despite our address usually being known) we lack this calming influence of another’s viewpoint, and it is only after we have pressed enter that we suddenly think that perhaps a different perspective is just as valid as the one we have sent through the ether. Asking ourselves the question posed by Bishop Barron would be a very useful reflex action to develop: why am I doing this?
