Unconscious Prophecy

As many commentators rightly note, the sayings in John’s gospel can be understood on many different levels.

Take Caiaphas’ “unconscious prophecy” today:

You do not seem to have grasped the situation at all. You fail to see that it is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed (John 11).

Poor Caiaphas. Here he is, thinking that others haven’t got a clue, when he himself is clueless.

But I best not be too smug myself. Have I really grasped the situation?

“God, be merciful to me a sinner.”

Amen.
