The local Archdiocese has good form in this area. On or about 15 July 1948, the Most Rev Guilford Clyde Young DD, was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, at age 31, reportedly making him the youngest bishop in the Church of the day (Young in name and young in fact!). As well as being Auxiliary, Bishop Young was parish priest of St Augustine’s, Yass. He became Coadjutor Archbishop of Hobart in 1954, thereafter serving as Archbishop of Hobart from 1955 to his death, at age 71, in 1988 (having, among other things, taken an active role in major conciliar deliberations of Vatican II in the early-mid 1960s). Also, on or about 12 June 1967, the Emeritus Archbishop, the Most Rev Francis Patrick Carroll DD, DCL, was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the neighbouring Diocese of Wagga Wagga, at only age 36 (younger than Bishop Sus above) – succeeding the late Bishop Henschke as Bishop of Wagga Wagga in early 1968.
