The truth of Christ
In today’s Gospel, Jesus sums up the laws of love with two commandments. He tells us we must not only love the Lord our God entirely, but we must also love one another.
Surely our Christian journey is about awakening the deepest desire of the heart and directing it toward God; it is about loving that which is most worthy of love. But Jesus says this love of God carries a necessary implication, compassion for one’s fellow human beings.
These two commandments are tightly linked because of who Jesus is. Christ is not just God, nor is he just human; he is fully human and fully divine. The one person in whom divinity and humanity meet.
Therefore, it is impossible to love him as God without loving the humanity that he has embraced.
These commandments not only guide us in love but also teach us about who Jesus is.
